On March 27, 1977, two Boeing 747s collided at Tenerife airport in the Canary Islands, killing 583 people. While Los Rodeos Airport, on the island of Tenerife, was plunged into fog, a KLM 747-200 began takeoff and collided with a Pan Am 747-100 that was returning to the runway. The accident remains the worst accidental disaster in aviation history, excluding the criminally motivated attacks of September 11, 2001.
