He is best known for playing Lieutenant Columbo in the television series of the same name from 1968 to 2003. He is also one of the favorite actors of director John Cassavetes, with whom he was a close friend. On July 25, 2013, he was posthumously awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
